Tech talk

THE HISTORY OF THE DIVE FIN

French navy lieutenant commander Loius de Corlieu patented the first recognizable dive fins in 1933.

The first full-foot design wasn’t developed until 1948 by Luigi Ferraro.

Referred to by various names including swimfins, flippers or just plain fins, their purpose
is to aid human movement through the water during many different types of water activities and sports by increasing thrust.

Various fin types and shapes have evolved over the years for specific activities but the basic principle for all remains the same.

Materials

Traditionally the vast majority of commercial fins have been made from pliable rubber, various types of polymer (plastic) and even silicon. Different attempts have been made to create a flexible yet durable composite fin with questionable success; mostly due to the brittle nature of normal carbon only-based composites.

NEX-GEN ADVANCED COMPOSITES

Innegra fiber compliments other composite fibers lending itself to a variety of applications in a multitude of markets. Automotive, luggage, protective products, radomes, ballistics, and aerospace, to name a few, all benefit from the tough, lightweight, energy absorbing, and hydrophobic properties of Innegra fiber.

SPORT & MARINE APPLICATIONS

Innegra material is used in many different sport and marine applications. Andy Murray racked up quite a few wins using his HEAD YOUTEK IG racquet, including the Olympics and Wimbledon. Dane Jackson flipped his way to a gold at the Freestyle Kayak World Championship in his kayak made with the Innegra H material. In addition, you can find Innegra in BIC & BOTE SUP Boards, Bauer goalie sticks, Berk Composite bicycle saddles, Mirage kayaks, AT whitewater paddles, Northshore boards, Fanatic's windsurf boards, SUP boards, and SUP paddles. Innegra fiber can enhance the impact resistance and damage tolerance while reducing weight and vibration in all of these applications.

What are the benefits of using Innegra/carbon spread-tow fiber?

  • Reduced weight
  • Increased damage tolerance
  • Increased impact resistance
  • Reduced maintenance
  • Incredible strength to weight ratio
  • Hydrophobic (doesn't absorb moisture)
  • Dampens vibration
  • Disperses energy
  • Hydrolytically stable (will not breakdown to chemicals)
  • Significantly reduces catastrophic failure

Nex-gensports Innegra/carbon composite fins use a special blend of spread tow fibers
and proprietary resin
and curing technology developed over several years of intense R&D.
