For generations the ’Go To’ general cleaning fabric used in countless workshops, garages and home households has been the humble cotton rag.
Used once and disgarded into landfill, few users take the time to understand the tremendous environmental cost of these simple items.
According to the US National Wildlife Federation and textile industry sources, it takes:
- 10,000 litres of clean water to grow 1 kg or cotton or 2,700 litres for one average cotton T-shirt
- That same weight of cloth requires 17 teaspoons of chemical fertilizer and includes 1 teaspoon of active chemicals including pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and defoliants
- Global cotton production in 2020 is estimated at 27 million tons
- Up to 40 million tons of mixed textile fabric is disposed of in landfill annually
- Only 27% of waste cotton is turned in to recycled cloth rags
- The rest is disposed of in landfill and can take up to hundreds of years to decompose (World Resources Institute)- When bended with other textiles.
